As I sit in the Admiral’s Club in LA waiting for my flight to San Diego for Comic-Con, I’m reflecting on my past year. I’ve been back at AMD for a year now and things have changed so much in the year since I’ve been back.

To start, I came back to AMD with the promise of a newly developed Demo Team (Demo meaning a team of people who demonstrate technologies around the world at tradeshows and events). I started off the job working in our showcase area in our headquarters executive building. I stayed pretty grounded at first, giving tours of the showcase room. Then someone requested my presence in San Francisco for an event we hold yearly in September. That was the beginning of a LONG 9 months (and counting).

In that time I’ve gone on roughly 20 business trips, flown over 75,000 miles, and neglected my yard nearly the whole time. hah.

It’s been awesome, and I can’t wait to see what the next year will bring. I’ve got great bosses, great co-workers, and a great job. I’m going to hold on to the job as long as I possibly can.

Highlights of all the traveling:

Making some good friends in Munich

Being mobbed by kids at LAX on my way to Taiwan and having them chant “Mario Mario Mario!” As I played Angry Birds (I had a moustache at the time).

Hanging out with a friend from home in Berlin for nearly a week.

Downside:

Sleeping in my hotel room while the Mad Men season 4 Premiere party was going on in my hotel in NYC (with the entire cast at the party)

That’s it, that’s the only thing I regret.

Random nerdy thought about space travel

Space travel is a great idea. The thought of flying around the solar system, galaxy and even the entire universe sounds like a great idea.

Problem with it. If we somehow solve the problem with not-being able to go fast enough to make interstellar travel possible, we still have the problem of being able to find our way home. It’s not like the ship would be able to use a GPS device.

The universe is constantly expanding at a rate great enough to where even if we were able to achieve speeds faster than the speed of light, it would take hundreds of thousands of years to reach the furthest reaches of space and come back. The problem with coming back is, our picture of the universe is fixed in time, heck, a lot of the stars we are looking at in the sky could very well not even exist by the time we were able to get to them.

Basically, if we send off a space-ship to travel the far reaches of the universe (which for all we know, has no end). We should never expect the ship to return, ever. Because it won’t. If it magically did, it would be hundreds of thousands of years later. People would have either wiped ourselves off the face of the earth, or evolved into something unrecognizable to the inhabitants of the space-ship (which probably also would have evolved on a completely different pathline.

It’s really sad to think about the fact that unless beings from other planets make themselves known to us, that we will never truly know if there is life on other planets. And who’s to say the aliens that may make themselves known to us aren’t just the old inhabitants of earth or mars, or whatever, returning from a hundred thousand+ year old journey.

You should watch this three times

You should watch this three times

Tacos

Tacos

Russia

A-hole butters mother Russia

Vin

(Puts on sunglasses)

I used to play this game constantly while I was still in college. It’s a free PC game, made in the vein of Final Fantasy III, and centers around Charles Barkley in a post apocalyptic world where HE doomed the world with the CHAOS DUNK, the worst dunk that a basketball player can do. Please watch the trailer and then try and tell me that you don’t want to play this game.

I used to play it and make my old roommate LeAnne watch, while I read all of his lines in a super-exaggerated Charles Barkley voice.

Seriously, if this doesn’t bring you joy, then I don’t know you.

Whopper Bar, oh and some place called Berlin

As for today’s update. I’ll give you a condensed version of the last 4 days or so’s updates.

Sunday, in Munich, walked to the train station, took it two stops, got off, walked the wrong direction from the station away from the BK Whopper Bar. Walked a good 4 miles (at least, not like I could tell with all the meters and kilometers signs *stupid american). Eventually figured out that I was on the wrong side of the train station. Got to the right side, and realized… oh yeah, in the Bavarian side of Berlin…. Everything’s closed on Sunday. When I say everything, I mean everything except for train stations and gas stations. Lunch and dinner was had at a gas station 2 miles from my hotel… after I had walked roughly 3 miles in every direction of my hotel in search of something open to eat at. A bag of nuts, a Coca Cola Light (.5 liter) and a ice cream cone from a gas station were my sustenance on Sunday.

Monday, In Munich, work as usual, preparing more computers for the show, shipping everything off to the show, and then helping out with various tasks around the office, since the Munich office lost their all around tech guy a few weeks prior. After work, I walked to the Whopper Bar, and it was as amazing as you would think it is.

Tuesday, more of the same, preparing another computer that had to be hand carried to the show. Not much exciting in the food department. I ate, well, pretty much, hot dogs in my hotel room from the hotel bar.

Wednesday, I flew from Munich to Berlin, and started setting up the booth.

Thursday, more setting up the booth, ate a delicious Falafel for dinner, it was also the cheapest meal I had so far, and the best.

Friday, first day of the show, a little over 12 hours of work, super tired, had a doner (gyro) from the same place I got a falafel the night before. It was amazing.

Saturday, didn’t even realize it was Saturday, kept wondering why I wasn’t getting any emails all day.

And now you’re caught up, as am I!

Update: Having a great time in Munich. I worked all day...

Update: Having a great time in Munich. I worked all day Thursday and Friday at our office prepping computers for the big show in Berlin. Enough about my work habits though… Let’s get to what we’re here for. The food.

The only place near my hotel that’s open past 6pm is an Italian restaurant. So I’ve been there three times. It’s pretty great.

Today (Saturday) I woke up late, I guess I was still getting a little over my jetlag, and hopped a train into town to eat at the Haufbrau Haus. It was delicious as always.

But who cares about any of this, because this evening, about 10 minutes ago, I was using google maps to try and find a train station tomorrow to stop at and find food. I stumbled upon something I didn’t think I would stumble across, only one train stop from my hotel…. Now you may look up at the google map

Munich day 1

Well, I’ve made it to Munich safe and sound. Acclimating to the time change, so I’ve been sleeping a lot, but so far it’s great. Tomorrow I head in to the office (which is less than a block from my hotel, and I begin my work. I’ll update tomorrow with some pictures. I didn’t take many today/yesterday, cause well… planes and airports are fairly boring. Also I haven’t had spare time to surf around and find crazy videos, but I’m sure tomorrow evening I’ll find time (tomorrow afternoon for all you crazy americans).

sexophone

sexophone:
I’m in a restaurant and I swear they just played the sexophone song

So great

So great

My next month

My schedule for the next month looks to be fairly busy, you be the judge:
